Customer Testimonials
Since 1996, BOC has affected and helped empower hundreds of artisans, from basket makers, to mat weavers, to purse maker/stylists. Our makers are often too shy to talk about themselves, but we do our best to get their stories, and follow ups years later. Here are just a few to give you a perspective on the realities of life in poor countries. What is amazing is that no matter how much people make, they always manage to send some money home to their parents back in their villages. Also humbling is the faith that our makers put in BOC, and the continual effort they put into raising quality standards so that they may continue to grow with us as our products are sold worldwide. In some cases, mistakes in English are left in place or mildly corrected to add a sense of reality to the stories and the cross cultural challenges.
Our Elephant Basket Line is considered one of our most durable and functional basket lines available anywhere. There may be no better natural basket in the world today for sheer durability and ease of use. They are all naturally organic, eco-friendly products that are complimentary to any home décor. Because we do not treat our baskets with harsh chemicals, they have the ability to remain flexible and durable over the years, and additionally, do not splinter like many home décor baskets that are on the market. Even more appealing is the reinforced handles on many of the baskets, leaving many of them in pristine condition after 10 years of use.

At Baskets of Cambodia, we abide by the firm belief that running an eco-friendly business is conducive of a successful and prosperous business. We depend on the continual re-growth of the “la peuk” that our baskets are composed of. We depend on the good health and wellbeing of the weavers to have a successful operation. We depend on the continual supply of packing materials to ship our product from Cambodia to the United States For these necessities to be maintained, we believe in nurturing the people and environments that make our business possible. Ultimately, we constantly look for new ways to improve our practices for the basic sake of good environmental stewardship. All of our products are made from organic grasses, free of any herbicide or pesticide treatment. We make a point to ensure that our product has a low impact on the surrounding environment and people connected to it. Below is an overview of our Operation Practices at Baskets of Cambodia, and what we are doing as a business to improve our environmental relationship.

In viewing our Fine Baskets Collection, you are looking at the products that started our expanding company. Delicately made from hand selected organic materials, these baskets are exclusively made in the areas surrounding the great Angkor Watt Temples. Because Baskets of Cambodia became the first business in Cambodia to provide channels for overseas export of this product, we named these baskets the ‘Royal Line’ of fine baskets, which was suiting to the collection.

This collection’s distribution in particular has reached retailers on an international level. With our range of cliental spanning from Museum’s to Boutique’s to Car Washes and University Bookstores, more and more people are being exposed to the unique designs our weavers fabricate.

The following images are some of the style selections that are currently available for wholesale clients.

At BOC we must measure part of our success against how much we have improved over local wages. To us this is about respect and proper representation of those who work for us. Without metrics, there is less incentive to improve and more incentive to capitalize on low wages. This is our way of giving those workers an actual measureable voice. Over the years BOC has consistently exceeded the norm for wages and benefits in the areas in which it employs our artisans. This also includes innovations such as company sponsored vacations, safety net coverage for those needing emergency healthcare whether by accident or illness, and no-interest loans also to those with emergency needs. Our goal is for our workers to want to work for us and help us create higher and higher quality products as we grow. At the same time we want to grow the wages they are able to take home with them. Once a year, and the floodwaters recede, rush grass is harvested in the Mekong and surrounding deltas. BOC recently acquired its first actual; weaving facility. Our first step was to raise the weavers salaries from $1.50 per day to $2.50 per day and above, but before BOC the goal among social enterprises was a mere $1.50 a day. Follow the pictorial here to see how this grass is harvested, selected, cut into strips, dyed and eventually woven into beautiful tatami style mats which have been used for centuries. BOC has specialized in bringing an international quality to the weaving patterns so our products fit in easily no matter where they are worn or used, all over the world.

Our Cambodian operations are in two major cities, Phnom Penh and Siem Riep, and scattered in villages all over the country. Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia, as well as the largest city, while Siem Riep is a cultural center, home to the famous temples of Angkor Wat. All of our makers are paid by the piece, so it is up to them where they work. Some choose to work at home, while others bike from their villages to work with others. The best makers usually work on-site so that they are available to make any custom orders that come in.

Baskets of Cambodia has supplied handcrafted goods to thousands of customers around the world.

Some have sent us their comments, observations and feedback on our designs and service. BOC has yet to edit or delete a basket review.
